The word "Au Pair" is French for "on par" or equal. FrenchAuPairs.com in association with The Au Pair Foundation program promotes this concept of equality in the relationship between the host family and Au Pair. The Au Pair lives with the host family as an equal member of the family; like an older sibling, and is included in family activities such as family meals, and holiday celebrations, unlike an "Employee" or "Servant" who might be excluded from such family gatherings. Through this Program, we hope to give American families the opportunity to learn more about world cultures by placing intelligent young people from other countries that display positive attitudes and a willingness to be ambassadors for their home countries. Au Pairs will be able to teach their host families about life in their countries and share the qualities of them and their culture throughout the program year. We feel that the host families, Au Pairs and the communities surrounding these families benefit from this exchange as the Au Pair integrates into daily American life. Through this Program, we also hope that the Au Pair will return to his/her home country and share with family, friends and countrymen a positive and realistic impression of life in America, the American people, and the uniquely blended and ever changing culture. |
